Cyclic olefins form complexes with copper (I) chloride, compete for ethylene binding in plants and are inhibitors of ethylene action. Both trans-cyclooctene and 2,5-norbornadiene are sterically strained molecules which are active. Steric factors may have two effects. Firstly, they may affect the ability of both agonists and antagonists to bind to the ethylene receptor, and secondly they may be involved in antagonist activity, perhaps by interfering with the trans effect, conformational change, or some other process of activation.
